February 2019 Section Meeting: NY Transit Museum Tour

The February 2019 Section Meeting will be preceded by a tour of the NY Transit Museum, located at 99 Schermerhorn Street Brooklyn, NY 11201.

Founded in 1976, the New York Transit Museum is dedicated to telling and preserving the stories of mass transportation – extraordinary engineering feats, workers who labored in the tunnels over 100 years ago, communities that were drastically transformed, and the ever-evolving technology, design, and ridership of a system that runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.  This bears on and helps understand the state of quality and challenges it faced in those days.

Housed underground in an authentic 1936 subway station in Downtown Brooklyn, the Transit Museum’s working platform level spans a full city block, and is home to a rotating selection of twenty vintage subway and elevated cars dating back to 1907.

Visitors can board the vintage cars, sit at the wheel of a city bus, step through a time tunnel of turnstiles, and explore changing exhibits that highlight the cultural, social and technological history – and future – of mass transit.

The New York Transit Museum is a self-supporting division of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Friends of the New York Transit Museum, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, was established in 1995 to promote and raise funds for the Museum’s operations and programs.

The tour will begin at 4:00pm and last 90 minutes.  Following the tour, attendees will meet at the nearby Queen Restaurant (84 Court Street) for a brief Section Meeting to discuss the tour and its quality aspects and enjoy a fixed-price Italian dinner with many choices, all included as part of the tour.  ASQ Section 300 Members are allowed to bring a guest.

TIME & PLACE: Attendees will assemble at the Transit Museum, located at 99 Schermerhorn Street Brooklyn, NY 11201, at 3:45pm; tour will begin at 4pm and be 90 minutes in length. The entrance to the Museum is down two flights of stairs. A wheelchair-accessible entrance is located on the corner of Schermerhorn and Court Streets.  Various subway lines, including the 2, 3, 4 and 5 to Borough Hall, provide service close to the Museum.  For those interested in driving, there are many parking lots available nearby.  A close one with good reviews is Edison ParkFast at 182 Schermerhorn Street.
