June 2019 Section Meeting: “Quality Professional” – Old Function, New Competencies

The term “quality professional” has been around for well over 100 years, and like the industries this function serves, the meaning and skill sets continually evolve to suit the needs of industry. Our profession is rapidly changing and the competencies required are no longer within a single discipline, but rather found in multiple disciplines ranging from traditional quality tools to ethics and IT. This presentation will discuss the core competencies and responsibilities of the modern quality professional, and why a diversified skill set is now more important than ever. Embark on your journey of change now, or risk being left behind wondering why job opportunities and career growth are limited.

Presented by: Carl Johansen, also known as “The Bearded Guru” is a quality management subject matter expert with over 10 years’ experience of program development. Carl holds a BSIT and MSTM in industrial technology, six sigma, and lean management from Central Connecticut State University. Additionally, Carl is ISO 9001:2015 and 14001:2015 lead auditor certified. In his current role at Con Edison Carl, he is the Section Manager for the Utility Shared Services Quality Management department and the program manager for the company-wide certification of its environmental management system to ISO 14001. For the last seven years, Carl has been applying the quality management techniques honed in the manufacturing industry to the energy and utility sector at Con Edison. In his spare time, Carl is an automotive enthusiast who enjoys MINI Cooper rallies and shows with friends. Carl is an active member of ASQ holding the marketing chair for the Design and Construction Division (DCD), the technology chair for the Customer-Supplier Division (CSD), and he’s a member of the environmental management sub-committee of ASQ’s Energy & Environment Division (EED) in the role of environmental management SME.
