Everyone has a personal brand. The question is, does your brand accurately represent who you are? It serves to reason that a strong brand is preferable to a weak one. In this session, Alex Freund, The Landing Expert, shares how to create a strong, compelling brand that will have companies wanting you for the position.

Companies spend millions every year building their brands. They are carefully crafted and vigorously defended. You need to put the same effort into your brand.

Looking at the job search process, hiring managers and human resource officials determine evaluate you quickly and based on few inputs. The good news is you have the opportunity to stand out.

Delivering your brand clearly and consistently is just as important, but first you need to understand what a brand is and isn’t. Alex explores “branding” and the art of creating a distinct brand for yourself. He will share which variables are most often used by Human Resources determining whether to call you in for an interview or not.

So whether you want to learn how create your own brand, become known in a new career field, or attract interviews, it may boil down to the quality of your brand.

During this event, you will:

  • Look at the concept of brand is (and isn’t)
  • Explore what it takes to build your awesome brand
  • Learn what it takes to be the candidate
  • Be taught how to position yourself to hear “Yes. It’s you we want.”

October 2018 Section Meeting: Quality Aspects as Artificial Intelligence Progresses

Beginning with a thought exercise on robots, we will consider aspects of intelligence we have come to expect from automation. Given two clear technology trajectories and certain potential technical disruptors, we’ll consider the time-distance to a horizon beyond which we cannot see clearly. Next is the hard part: what defines the intelligence quality? Assuming artificial intelligence (AI) is a bundled set of responses to stimuli and query, a personality will emerge. What kinds of personalities are we going to specify in upcoming technology? Who will corporations entrust to set the tolerances for mission assurance parameters and establish risk registers? This talk will make the case that because of AI’s shortening of the time-horizon in technology, leadership positions will transition from engineers to liberal arts majors.

Presented By: Dr. Beth Kujan, PMP, LEED AP BD+C

Beth Kujan – Dr. Kujan is a classically trained materials scientist and an engineering project manager. She currently works at NJIT on a grant to support talent networks in Life Sciences, Health Care, Advanced Manufacturing and Construction and Utilities by providing specialized data analysis and information on technology trends. Prior to NJIT, she served as VP Market development for ARL Designs LLC, an advanced materials startup company. Dr. Kujan secured $1M+ in grants and paid evaluations from potential customers. Like many engineers in NJ, Dr. Kujan is an alumna of Bell Labs Murray Hill. She was a founding board member of Green Vision, Inc. a 501c3 hiring an autistic workforce.

Dr. Kujan earned her PhD in Materials Science from Cornell University and her BS from MIT. She holds a Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. Dr. Kujan currently freelances as a project manager and/or subject matter expert.

Section Meeting: Workforce Issues for NJ Manufacturers – The Need for Skilled Workers

Join us for the June 2018 section meeting where Ray Vaccari will share with us the state of NJ’s manufacturing industry, focusing on its workforce issues. NJ has 11,000 manufacturing companies, 90% of which have 50 or less employees. Most of these companies do not have HR departments to help find and develop the skilled workers they need to continue operations and grow in the future. This talk will focus on the issues manufacturers have due to the shortage of skilled workers. Ray will discuss programs the NJ Dept. of Labor has implemented to help train incumbent and new workers. He will also present what educators are doing, particularly in the Career Technical Education (CTE) schools (aka votechs), private schools, community colleges and four year universities. One solution that NJIT has developed is the MechaFORCE Registered Internship Manufacturing Program, M-RIM, in which NJIT acts as a sponsor for apprenticeships, or registered internships, for NJ manufacturers.

Section Meeting: A Clog in the Wheel of Quality Management

The risk of fraud is very real and unfortunately, happens often. Fraudulent activities have always been woven within the corporate fabric and cuts across industries, businesses and governmental establishments. History has shown that the impact of fraud can be catastrophic and have a lasting adverse effect. Fraud events have increased in recent years due to a variety of reasons including the financial benefit, opportunity, motive, justification or rationalization. Certainly, its awareness, prevention and early detection are very important in sustaining a quality management system. The discussion will include:

Section Meeting: Singapore Culture and Quality Presentation and Grand Central Terminal Tour

This event is a General Section Meeting where attendees are invited to bring a spouse or significant other. The February 2018 Section Meeting and Singapore Culture Presentation will be preceded by an optional tour of Grand Central Terminal. A Tour Guide will lead a 75 minute tour of historic Grand Central Terminal, currently the home of Metro-North Railroad and soon to be a second Manhattan destination for the Long Island Railroad in addition to its current Penn Station destination. Tour Guide will lead the tour group through the Terminal describing its grand history and current operations. Following the tour, the group will walk to nearby Annie Moore’s Bar and Restaurant for the Section Meeting, including dinner and a very informative presentation on Singapore Culture and Quality.

Section Meeting: What Does cGXP Mean And What Are The Differences Between cGLP, CGMP and cGCP?

Many of us work in a regulated environment. We may work on the manufacturing floor of a pharmaceutical company or we may work in a clinical laboratory in a hospital. Many of us may work in a government laboratory or in an academic laboratory in a university. There is a common thread impacting all these settings which is known as cGXP. cGXP is a set of regulations which impact an organization to stay within compliance so as not to harm the public and result in closure of the institution. Within cGXP there are three categories which impact most workplaces and they are; cGMP, cGCP and cGLP. I will explain how these categories differ and the consequences that occur by not following these regulations. I am hoping that after this presentation, if you see something that is incorrect at your work place you will be able to cleverly point it out to your QA/compliance manager.

Whether it is in the laboratory, manufacturing floor or in the clinic there are regulatory requirements to be met. cGXP for the most part are the guiding regulations and there is confusion how these regulations differ. Please attend this meeting to find out.

Section Meeting: Got Risk? Risk Assessment Tools for ISO 14001: 2015

In 2015, ISO 9001 was not the only management system standard revised to include risk and opportunities requirements. The latest revision of ISO 14001 also now includes risk and opportunity requirements for an environmental management system (EMS). But how can your EMS meet these requirements? Join us for a presentation of one company’s efforts to incorporate risk in the EMS. Specific discussion points include: developing and managing an EMS risk assessment process as part of a larger risk portfolio, risk tools and techniques adopted for determining environmental aspect significance, developing tools to include sustainability efforts in the EMS risk assessment process, and developing tools to communicate EMS risk assessment results to stakeholders.

In his current role at Con Edison Carl is the Section Manager for the Utility Shared Services Quality Management department and the program manager for the company-wide certification of its environmental management system to ISO 14001. Carl is applying quality management techniques honed in the manufacturing industry to the energy and utility sector at Con Edison. In his spare time, Carl is an automotive enthusiast who enjoys MINI Cooper rallies and shows with friends.

Carl is an active member of ASQ holding the marketing chair for the Design and Construction Division (DCD), the technology chair for the Customer-Supplier Division (CSD), and he’s a member of the environmental management sub-committee of ASQ’s Energy & Environment Division (EED) in the role of environmental management SME.
